RECENT ADVENTURES: CANADA ALASKA AND JAPAN
From the Rockies to Ramen: My Canada–Japan Photography Adventure
It all started in Calgary, where I met up with two fabulous local photographers, Connie and Vivien. Within minutes, we were laughing like old friends as they whisked me off to the Rockies for the day. Oh wow, what a day that was! Picture-perfect scenery and the kind of laughter that makes your cheeks hurt.
Then came the 10-day Rockies tour — eight photographers, two cars, and me behind the wheel of one of them. It was great fun until I realised I was driving on the other side of the road! Let’s just say full concentration was required. My inner monologue went something like this: “Stay right. No, not that right. Watch the branch! Too close! Agh, the edge!” But I’m proud to report — no accidents! Roundabouts were an absolute delight (or maybe more like a comedy show). Between near misses and bursts of laughter, we managed to capture sunrises, sunsets, waterfalls, wildlife, and even squeeze in a boat cruise. If it existed in the Rockies, we photographed it!
At Emerald Lake, I was carefully making my way to my photography spot, trying not to trip over the maze of dead branches, tree roots, and overgrowth that seemed determined to take me down. An elderly couple walked by and greeted me with a friendly “hello.” I smiled and returned the greeting, when suddenly the gentleman stopped, peered at me, and said, “Do I know you?” I laughed and replied, “I don’t think so — I’m from Australia.” He looked at me for a moment longer and then exclaimed, “Are you Wendy Klein?” I nearly dropped dead on the spot — camera, tripod and all! Turns out his name is Nyall, and he’s been following my photography for years. Who would’ve thought I’d be recognised in the middle of the Canadian wilderness, battling tree roots and fame at the same time!
From there, I swapped mountains for moose — or rather, Alaska, where the rain clearly didn’t get the memo that I’m here to capture lovely colourful skies. But hey, the wildlife was worth every soggy second. Then it was back to Vancouver for four wonderful days. There, I met Naini, a local photographer who wanted to meet “a great photographer,” his words, not mine! We ended up spending two full days together — he was not only an excellent guide but became a dear friend. Then another photographer reached out for breakfast, declaring, “I want to be you when I retire!” Well, who was I to argue? Before I knew it, I was also off to the Prime Academy studio to be interviewed, followed by a fantastic dinner at Dockside with Tim and Lea. That’s also when I finally met Chris, the legendary “Pano King.” His panoramic shots are jaw-dropping and he’s as lovely in person as his work is wide!
Then it was time to trade maple leaves for mountain temples — destination Japan! From Sapporo to Mt Fuji, Nagano, and Tokyo, it was a photographer’s dream: autumn colours painting the mountains, the mystical Blue Pond, delicate waterfalls, and just the right dusting of snow on Fuji’s peak. Nagano’s mountain lakes were pure serenity, the castles majestic, the tea plantations peaceful, and the Torii gates iconic. Of course, no Japanese adventure is complete without… the beds. Let’s just say they’re designed for people who enjoy sleeping on concrete slabs, and the pillows? Rocks with pillowcases! Add in rooms the size of a broom closet and you’ve got yourself the full authentic experience. But honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing — it’s all part of the charm (and the back pain).
What a journey — from the wild Rockies to the calm of Mt Fuji , laughter to exhaustion, sunrises to sunsets.
Final Thoughts
If this adventure taught me anything, it’s that life’s too short not to laugh at yourself — especially when you’re driving on the wrong side of the road, tripping over tree roots, or being recognised by a stranger in the middle of the Canadian wilderness! From the majestic Rockies to the misty temples of Japan, every sunrise, every soggy day, and every rocky “bed” was part of the story.
So here’s my philosophy: enjoy life, make the most of every single day, and never stop exploring. Say yes to adventure, laugh through the chaos, and keep your camera ready — because you never know when the next breathtaking shot (or hilarious moment) will find you. And if you happen to meet someone who knows your name halfway around the world… well, that’s just the universe saying you’re exactly where you’re meant to be.
