If the Faroe Islands taught me anything, it is that you shoud never trust the weather forecast or a brand new pair of hiking boots! This spectacular collection of islands welcomed me with gale force winds, mist, low cloud, rain, sunshine and then more rain, often within the same ten minutes. One moment I was photographing a beautiful waterfall under dramatic clouds but a little colour came through at sunset , and the next I was hanging onto my tripod and hiking poles, trying not to become the newest tourist attraction flying across the North Atlantic.

The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Towering mountains and rolling green hills plunged dramatically into the sea, while waterfalls tumbled over cliffs as though they had somewhere terribly important to be.

Spectacular rock stacks rose from the ocean, winding roads curled around the mountains, and colourful lighthouses stood bravely against the windy weather.

Around many corners was another beautiful scene that made me call, “stop the car!” It was usually just after we had passed the safest place to pull over.

The narrow curving roads carried us past peaceful lakes, rugged beaches, deep canyons, salmon farms floating in the sea and quaint churches surrounded by tiny colourful homes. Sheep were everywhere there wasn’t many fences I noticed to keep them in and they seem to get right away when you meet them on the roads and it was if they owned the islands. To be fair they probably do. lol We also encountered magnificent cows with long horns which I admired from a very respectful distance.

Most days involved hiking up moountains and hills with my camera gear, tripod and hiking poles. My backpack seemed to become heavier with every step, while the hills appeared to grow steeper whenever I looked away. My new hiking boots also decided to leave me with enormous blisters on both heels and it took three days before I could get to a pharmacy to get some gel pads. So I wasn’t walking gracefully through the Faroese landscape as I was hobbling like an injured puffin carrying twelve kilograms of camera equipment.

The boat trips gave us an entirely different view of the islands. We travelled beneath towering sea cliffs and past incredible rock formations while the seabirds circled overhead. The hightlight of the trip (there was many) seeing the puffins up so close was a real highlight. These colourful little characters looked delightfully cute and slightly bewildered, rather like me when another gust of wind nearly blew me over! These puffins fly so quick and come back with so many fish in their mouth to feed the young.

Every challenging hike, gusty winds, rain showers and aching blisters was truely worth it.

The Faroe Islands certainy tested me with fierce winds, rain that arrived sideways, mist that swallowed entire mountains, and new hiking boots that kindly left me matching blisters on both heels! Yet every steep hill and winding road revealed something extraordinary. Thundering waterfalls, dramatic rock stacks, tiny churches, colourful homes, curious sheep of all different colours, and breathtaking views around every corner.

Despite everything the weather threw at us, The Faroes captured my heart. I returned home with aching legs, battered feet, a number of photos and memories that will make me smile for a long time.

WOULD I GO BACK? Absolutley but next time, I’m making sure my boots are well and truely broken in.

Hope you enjoyed reading a little bit of my aventure to the Faroe Islands. It was a fantasic experience, with a fabulous guide. We were based at the Hilton Hotel which was awesome with buffet goumet breakfast. If you are wondering is this country is expensive to visit - yes it is.
